Stories That Matter is The NOLA Project’s touring program that brings socially relevant theatre into schools, libraries, and community spaces across Greater New Orleans.
Through this initiative, professional theatre artists present powerful works of dramatic literature directly within learning environments. Each production is paired with facilitated conversations that help students engage with the themes of the work and connect them to their own lives and communities.
Stories That Matter uses theatre as a tool for reflection, dialogue, and civic engagement. By bringing live performance into classrooms and community spaces, the program removes barriers to access and invites young people to experience theatre that reflects the realities and questions shaping their world.
The program launched in March 2026 with a staging of A LESSON BEFORE DYING based on the novel by Ernest J. Gaines. A Louisiana literary classic, the story confronts racial injustice, dignity, and the death penalty.
The production was presented in collaboration with community and justice organizations working directly on issues connected to the play’s themes. These partnerships helped frame the performances within broader conversations about justice, history, and civic responsibility.
Each year, Stories That Matter presents a new production selected for its literary significance and social relevance. Performances tour directly to schools and community venues, allowing students and families to experience professional theatre in spaces that are familiar and accessible.
Following each performance, artists facilitate conversations that invite audiences to reflect on the themes of the play and the ways those themes connect to their own communities.
For many students, the program provides their first experience with professional theatre. By pairing storytelling with dialogue, Stories That Matter deepens literary engagement while encouraging empathy, critical thinking, and civic awareness.
Schools and organizations interested in hosting a performance or learning more about the program can contact The NOLA Project Artistic Director Tenaj Wallace at twallace@nolaproject.com or 504-335-6962.
